Seymour Spatt

April 20, 1923 - April 15, 2022

Seymour (Sam) Spatt, Shmuel ben Jacob, died peacefully at his home at Park Towers at 2:41 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2022. At the time, he was surrounded by his daughters, one of his sons-in-law and several of his loving caretakers, to whose devotion the family is particularly indebted. Born in Jersey City, NJ in 1923, he spent the last years of his professional life at the USPS. However, he was a pharmacist by training and for decades he ran (with a brother-in-law) a pharmacy in Reynoldsburg. He received his degree at The Ohio State University where he met his wife of 70 years, MaryAnn (Melmed), from Columbus, with whom he had five daughters: Debbie Spatt, Sharon Spatt, Elaine (Paco) Spatt-Bataller, Shelley Spatt, and Jodi (Mark) Margolies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Gertrude (Bisgaier) Spatt, his sister Roselyn, his wife MaryAnn (who passed away two and a half years earlier than him) and his daughters Debbie and Jodi. He is survived by daughters Sharon, Elaine and Shelley, two sons-in-law (Paco and Mark), five grandchildren (Paloma (Tom) Bataller-Carrington from Seattle, Amber (Philip) Fowler from Columbus, Daniel (Sonia) Bataller-Spatt from Barcelona, and Devon Henderson and Sami Margolies both from Columbus) and three great grandchildren (Arnai Spatt from Columbus and Isaac and Aaron Bataller from Barcelona). He is also survived by his two brothers-in-law, Bernie (Beverly) Melmed from Florida and Jack (Valerie) Melmed from California. Graveside services will be held at 1 PM on Monday, April 18th at the New Beth Jacob Cemetery, 2565 Performance Way. Shiva will take place on Monday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Social Room in Park Towers, 1620 E. Broad St. where he lived. On consideration of Pesach, respect for its dietary restrictions will be observed. In consideration of COVID, everyone visiting will be required to wear a mask at all times; windows will also remain open all the time to ensure proper air circulation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in support of efforts to address Ukrainian Jews’ current needs.
