Norman Folpe, born on June 21, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, passed away Friday December 4, 2015 at home. Preceded in death by Father, Lawrence Folpe and mother, Peg Goldwasser. Survived by wife of 60 years, Joan Sokolof Folpe; daughters, Debbie Folpe, Laurie Folpe Levison (Michael); grandchildren, Jeffrey Levison (Tonia), Gary Levison, Emma Haase and Alex Haase; great grandchildren, Sophia, Meira, Reuven Levison and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Fayann and Melvin Weiss. Norman was retired Senior Vice President Huntington National Bank. Formerly Executive Director Downtown Area Committee (1960-1965). In charge of Land Acquisition for the Columbus Expressway System (1955-1960). Real Estate Broker (1951-1955). Member of Columbus, Ohio and National Board of Realtors. Earned Certified Property Manager Designation from the International Real Estate Managers organization and the G.R.I. designation from the Ohio State Board of Realtors. Active in civic, professional and religious organizations, President Columbus Junior Chamber of Commerce, Chairman Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, Chairman Central Ohio Transit Authority, Chairman Port Columbus Airport Advisory Authority, Member City of Columbus Parks and Recreation Commission, Member Columbus School for Girls Board. President Temple Israel and President Temple Israel Brotherhood. During his tenure as Executive Director of the Downtown Area Committee he was part of a group that developed the format of The Arts Festival, he served as staff for the Festival for the first three years. He was a member of the staff for the Columbus Sesquicentennial celebration. He worked to change the Franklin County Planning Committee to the Mid-Ohio Regional Commission. He served on the study committee to buy the Columbus Transit Company from Columbus & Southern Electric Co. and worked on the Committee to pass a bond levy for the acquisition and then served on the first Board of Directors. He served on the first Board of Directors of the Rickenbacker Port Authority. Awarded Distinguished Service Award from the Columbus Junior Chamber of Commerce, Top Ten Citizen Award from the Columbus Citizen Journal in 1972, The Columbus Law Day Award from the Columbus Bar Association and City of Columbus Mayor’s Medallion. Named Corporate “Gunslinger” by Columbus Monthly Magazine. Attended Cleveland Heights High School, graduated Hollywood High School Los Angeles California. Attended The Ohio State University, University of Southern California and Graduated from Franklin University. Pledged Sigma Alpha Mu at Ohio State and was President of the chapter at U.S.C. where he was a member of the honorary sophomore, junior and senior service organizations, Squires and Knights. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00pm on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Temple Israel, 5419 East Broad St. with Rabbi Misha Zinkow officiating. Burial will follow at The Temple Israel section of Forest Lawn. Shiva will be observed at the residence from Sunday thru Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00p.m. At Norm’s request, please direct donations in his memory to Temple Israel or Mount Carmel Hospice.
