Lawrence “Larry” D. Schaffer, age 85, passed away on September 20, 2015. Larry began his long career of community involvement as one of only 2 Jewish Eagle Scouts at that time in Columbus, Ohio. Larry graduated from The Ohio State University. He served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1955 and retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1961 with the rank of Captain. Larry was President of OSU Alumni Inter-Fraternity Council and received the 1968 AIC “Fraternity Man of the Year” award. He was International President and Educational Foundation Trustee of the Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity, Chapter Advisor to the OSU chapter and President of Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation. Schaffer endowed the fraternity’s Lawrence Schaffer Leadership Fund. Member of the German Village Commission of Columbus from 1964 – 1968, he served as its chairman in 1965. He was a 50+ year member of the Columbus Board of Realtors. Member of the Board of Trustees of the OSU Hillel Foundation, serving as President from 1967 – 1969. Larry was a member and officer of the Board of Trustees for Congregation Tifereth Israel, Wexner Heritage House, Jewish Family Services, Jewish Community Center, Columbus Jewish Foundation, Columbus Jewish Day School and Columbus Jewish Federation, (earning its “Outstanding Young Leader” award). Larry was the chairman of the Committee on College Youth and Faculty for the National Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, Chairman of the Board of Directors of American Bancorporation, past Director of Quaker City National Bank as well as past director of First City Bank. Schaffer was given the first ever JCC Shem Tov “Good Name” Award, which is now named in his honor. He was voted OSU Alumni of the Year in 2005, and was awarded the Ben Mandelkorn Lifetime Achievement Award from Columbus Jewish Foundation. He was founder and President of Town Homes, Inc., a real estate management company. Lawrence was known as “Uncle Larry” to all who knew and loved him. Preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Max Schaffer. He is survived by his sister, Ruth (Burton) Schildhouse; nieces, Julie (Michael) Jacobson, Amy (Josh) Greenberg and Melissa (James) Welsh; grand nieces, Bess Greenberg, Lily Welsh; grand nephews, Daniel Zabludovsky, Jacob Greenberg and Max Welsh. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, September 22 at EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main St. with Rabbi Harold Berman officiating. Burial will follow at New Tifereth Israel cemetery. Shiva will be observed immediately following burial at the home of Amy and Josh Greenberg. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to Wexner Heritage Village, Zusman Hospice or a charity of donor’s choice.
