September 3, 1916 - September 29, 2012
Harriet Katherine Shustick Korn, age 96, born in Columbus, September 3, 1916, and a life-long Columbus resident. Harriet was the beloved youngest of the six children of George and Sadie Shustick. She graduated from South High School and attended Ohio State University, and on July 6, 1941 married Harold A. Korn, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage until his death on July 9, 2007. Following Harold’s service in the war, Harriet and Harold raised their four children, first in the old Driving Park neighborhood and later in Bexley. Though a full-time mom (and a terrific cook!), Harriet found time for volunteer service. She was a member of Congregation Tifereth Israel – she was the last surviving member of the confirmation class of 1932 – and its Sisterhood, the National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, ORT, Heritage House auxiliary, and the Columbus Jewish Historical Society. In May 2010 she became the eldest member of the first B’nai Mitzvah class from Creekside at the Village. Harriet was predeceased by her parents, by her brothers Abe (Esther) and Cecil (Rose) Shustick, and by her sisters, Fannie (Abram) Bonowitz, Mollie (Sigmund) Schwartz, and Bertha (Jack) Patricoff. She is survived by children Charles (Deborah Raiken) of Williamsville, NY, Judith Oppenheimer of Columbus, Margery (Marc) Hollander of Bexley, and David (Janie Marr Werum) of Columbus; grandchildren Stephanie (Scott) Mann, Daniel, Ariella, and Elana Korn; Geoffrey Oppenheimer; Rachel, Scott, and Emily Hollander; and Susan and Janie Korn; and great-grandson Jaxon Mann; and many, many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends near and far. She was a special person, a ‘real lady’ and a down-to-earth mentor and confidante. The family wishes to thank Harriet’s wonderful caregivers and the staff of Creekside and Golden Guidance (special mention to Kathy, Maya, and Carmen). Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 3rd at the Epstein Memorial Chapel, 3232 East Main Street, Rabbi Harold Berman officiating, with burial to follow at the New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Hollander residence, Wednesday evening 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday 7 to 9 p.m., Friday afternoon 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday 7 to 9 p.m., and at Creekside at the Village, Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. Shiva service will be Tuesday, OCTOBER 9TH evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Hollander residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Harriet’s memory to Congregation Tifereth Israel, MAZON, Wexner Heritage House and the Columbus Jewish Historical Society.
