Harold A. Korn Obituary (2007)

Harold Allan Korn, age 91, born in Columbus, April 11, 1916, and a life-long Columbus resident. Harold was the oldest of the five children of William and Dora (Levison) Korn. He attended East High School and graduated from North High in 1934. Following high school he attended Ohio State University. During the Depression years the Korn family operated a popular campus eatery, Lindey’s, located at Tenth Avenue and High Street, where Jim Rhoades, Howard Metzenbaum and many other OSU students of the ‘30’s got a square meal, and where Harold and his brothers and sisters worked. Harold attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, graduating in 1941. Following graduation he married Harriet (Shustick), on July 6, 1941. Harold served in the United States Army during World War II, and was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey and Rheims, France. It was there that he was responsible for the clarity of vision of the Supreme Allied Commander, as he made General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s glasses. Following discharge from the military, Dr. Korn opened his office at 142 East State Street Downtown and practiced at that location for more than 50 years. Dr. Korn was a member of many organizations, including Congregation Tifereth Israel and Jewish War Veterans, and also served as a member of the Ohio Student Loan Commission. He was a generous donor to many worthy causes and philanthropies. Dr. Korn is predeceased by his parents, his brothers-in-law Nathan Rosen and Howard Brody, and sister-in-law Annette Korn. He is survived by his beloved wife, Harriet, children Charles (Deborah Raiken) Korn of Williamsville, NY; Judith (Bruce MacLaren) Oppenheimer of San Mateo, CA; Margery (Marc) Hollander of Bexley and David Korn, of Columbus; grandchildren Stephanie (Scott) Mann, Daniel, Arriella and Elana Korn; Geoffrey Oppenheimer; Rachel, Scott and Emily Hollander; and Susan and Janie Korn; and great-grandson Jaxon Mann; brothers Morton and Irving (Betty) Korn, and sisters Sylvia Rosen and Harriet Brody; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends near and far. He was a special person, always generous with advice to young professionals, many of whom looked up to him as a friend, advisor, and mentor. Harold loved a good meal, a hot night of gin rummy, and every game the Buckeyes ever played. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers of Zusman Memorial Hospice, Creekside at the Village, and Golden Guidance. Funeral service 1 pm Wednesday, July 11 at the EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main St., with Rabbis Michael Ungar and Cary Kozberg officiating. Burial to follow at the New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the Hollander residence 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm Weds., and Thursday, and 1-4pm on Sunday.
