Ethel H. Novak, 89, died peacefully on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. She was born in Columbus, Ohio to Anna and Morris Hackman. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Stanley Novak, her parents, devoted brother Jack Hackman, sisters-in-law Frances Hackman, Suzanne Hackman, Justine Hackman and brother-in-law Arnold Zacks. She is survived by daughters, Marlene (Lester) Slobin of Houston, TX, Susanne (Gerald) Robins and Cynthia (William) Friedman of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Scott (Pam) Slobin of Denver, CO, Todd (Stephanie) Slobin of Houston, TX, Amy (Steve) Kandel of Bakersfield, CA, Melissa (Don) Keller, Jason (Jill) Monus, Brett Monus, Scott Friedman and Ariane Friedman of Columbus; twelve great-grandchildren, Ava, Sam and Ziva Slobin, Aliza Kandel, Max and Nate Keller, Jackson and Juliette Monus and Davis, Lena, Miles and Alexandra Friedman; brothers, Jerome (Linda) Hackman, Martin (Lois) Hackman of Boca Raton, FL; sister-in-law Benita Zacks and many nieces and nephews. The family wants to give a special thank you to her care takers Margaret Thurman, Loni Sanders, Danielle Smith and Deanna Thurman. A lifelong resident of Bexley, she was a prominent real estate agent in the Bexley area for over 50 years, retiring from King Thompson/ Coldwell Banker in 2009. Ethel was a member of the Columbus Board of Realtors receiving membership in the 25 million dollar club in 1988. A member of Congregation Tifereth Israel and life member of the Columbus Chapter of Hadassah and The Wexner Heritage House. Funeral services will be held 2p.m. on Friday, September 9th at THE EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main St. with Rabbi Harold Berman and Cantor Jack Chomsky officiating. Burial will follow at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the home of Cynthia and William Friedman on Sunday and Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Justine Hackman Cultural Arts Fund at Congregation Tifereth Israel, 1354 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43205, or to a charity of one’s choice.
