Dr. David Yashon

May 13, 1935 - November 21, 2016

Dr. David Yashon M.D. F.A.C.S; F.R.C.S. of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016. He was born on May 13, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Sam and Dorothy Yashon, immigrants from Ukraine and Poland respectively. David graduated from the University of Illinois with a M.Sc., in 1958. He attended the University of Illinois, receiving his Doctor of Medicine in 1960, remaining at the University of Illinois for his internship and residency in Neurosurgery and Neuropathology. David started General Surgery at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital and then continued to have many appointments during his medical career in the Neurology Field of Medicine. David began his career as an Assistant in Neuroanatomy, (University of Illinois, 1960), Clinical Instructor in Neurosurgery (University of Chicago, 1965-1966), Associate Attending Neurosurgeon (Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, 1965-1966), Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, 1966-1969), Associate Professor of Neurosurgery (The Ohio State University, 1969-1974), and Professor of Neurosurgery (The Ohio State University, 1974). David retired in 2011 as Professor of Neurosurgery, Emeritus at The Ohio State University, Associate Neurosurgeon at Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio and Neurosurgeon at Central Ohio Neurological Surgeons, Westerville, Ohio. David was a member of the Hospital Staffs of Riverside Methodist Hospital, Doctor’s Hospital (courtesy), Mount Carmel Hospitals (East and West), OSU East Hospital, and Grant/Riverside Hospital. Dr. Yashon was appointed Captain, Medical Corps of the 108th Engineer Battalion for the Illinois Army National Guard on May 23, 1962. He retired as a former Captain, Medical Corps in the United States Army Reserve and was honorably discharged from the Army of the United States on October 5, 1968. David received many certifications from American Board of Neurological Surgery (1968), Fellow – Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (1969), Certified – Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (1969), and Fellow – American College of Surgeons (1970). Dr. Yashon served as Clinical Instructor in Neurosurgery at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve, and Professor at the Ohio States University Hospital. Dr. Yashon founded the Central Ohio Neurological Surgeons, which grew to be one of the largest neurosurgery practices in the country. Dr. Yashon authored/co-authored three books, including Spinal Injury an oft cited text by researchers; Cytology of Tumors Affecting the Nervous System”, with his friend and mentor Dr. John Jane and “The Tzagournis Chronicles” a stranger than fiction account of startling misdeeds at a Midwestern College of Medicine. Dr. Yashon also authored numerous papers and articles. He was a member of Omega Beta Pi, Alpha Omega Alpha, National Neurology B Study Section thru National Institutes of Health, Treasurer, and The Ohio State Neurosurgical Society. Educational Committee - Ohio State Neurosurgical Society, committee on Aneurysmorrhaphy and Tissue Adhesives- American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Associate Neurosurgeon Children’s Hospital, Assistant in Neuroanatomy University of Illinois, Clinical Instructor in Neurosurgery University of Chicago, Central Ohio Neurological Surgeons, Inc. He received Honors from Omega Beta Pi and Alpha Omega Alpha, University of Illinois, Class Honors, University of Illinois and College Honors University of Illinois and many more renowned accolades during his career. In his fifty-one year career many lives were saved and changed, and he influenced fellow comrades within the medical field and community. He loved everything about being a surgeon, his surgery skills were indisputable. David had an active and inquisitive mind. He enjoyed reading, engaging in medical conversations, faithful to exercises, listening to music, cooking his mother’s recipes, spending time with family and friends, and traveling to places, both new and familiar. He was preceded in death by parents, relatives and friends; and is survived by loving soulmate and wife Tahitia Yashon; children: Jaclyn (Ronnie) Callander, Lisa Yashon (John) and Steven; Step children: Marcedez and Yusef-Jamaal; Grandchildren: Ranen, Simone, Lincoln and Joshua, Sister: Tena (Philip) Graber, Cousin Leah (David) Wexler: Uncle Irving Cutler, Trusted Friends and Family: Olga Kovacs, Sgt. Sherrard A. Thomas Sr., Pearlie Walton, Robert Lowzins, his former Secretary, Joyce, The Yashon Family, The Cutler Family, The Pollock Family and many other family and friends. Donations can be made to The Yashon Award of the David Yashon M.D. F.A.C.S.; F.R /C.S. ( C ) Phi Delta Epsilon Endowment Fund is named after David. Graveside celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the New Temple Israel Cemetery, 2565 Performance Way, Columbus, Ohio 43207. Shiva will be observed following the service at Waterford Towers, 155 W. Main St., Columbus.
